As the final hours of 2024 wind down, I find myself reflecting on what has been a monumental year in my life. This year wasn’t just a chapter in my story—it was a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of hope. It was a year of triumph over circumstances many thought would define me forever. But I’ve shown, through faith and hard work, that we are not confined by the judgments of others or the walls we once found ourselves behind.

In 2010, I was sentenced to 360 months in federal prison as a first-time offender in a nonviolent drug conspiracy. A sentence like that can shatter hope. But I refused to let it. Instead, I used my time to learn, grow, and prepare for a better future. In 2021, I returned home on home confinement, determined to rebuild my life. I carried a vision and a plan, written down during those long nights in prison, and I’ve spent every moment since turning that vision into reality.

Clemency Granted: A Milestone Beyond Words

2024 brought one of the most life-changing moments in my journey: clemency. On December 12, President Biden granted me clemency. This act wasn’t just a reduction of my sentence; it was an affirmation of the man I’ve worked hard to become. This milestone will forever be etched in my heart, reminding me of how far I’ve come and what’s still possible.

Academic Excellence Against the Odds

Since coming home, I’ve been relentless in my pursuit of education. I graduated with an associate degree in Information Technology, concentrating in cybersecurity, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout my college journey. I’ve earned certifications in cybersecurity, AI, and web development, including honors from prestigious organizations like CodePath. Each course and certification is a step toward the tech career I dreamed of while behind bars.

Breaking Through Stigmas

While I’ve refused to let the opinions of others dictate my worth, I can’t deny the challenges of overcoming the stigmas that often come with a past like mine. Whether it was the skepticism of those who doubted me or the quiet judgments I felt in certain spaces, I faced it all head-on. I didn’t just endure—I excelled. I became an Assistant Store Manager at Dollar General, proving my leadership skills in a demanding environment. More importantly, I shattered stereotypes and showed that redemption and growth are real.

Stepping Into Tech

2024 was also the year I broke into the tech industry, landing my first internship at the year’s end. This opportunity marks the beginning of a new chapter, one where I’ll continue to grow, contribute, and make a name for myself in a field that once felt so far out of reach. In early 2025, I’ll officially begin this next phase of my journey, fueled by the same determination that carried me through my darkest days.

The Role of AWS Educate in Highlighting My Journey

A pivotal moment in 2024 was the opportunity to collaborate with AWS Educate. Their team came down to feature my story, shining a spotlight on my journey from incarceration to clemency, and my relentless pursuit of a career in tech. This experience wasn’t just about celebrating my accomplishments—it was about using my story to inspire others who might feel that their past limits their future.

Through AWS Educate, I was able to share how education and determination transformed my life. They amplified my voice, showing others that with focus and perseverance, barriers can be broken, and dreams can be realized. Their platform allowed me to not only highlight my journey but also encourage others who are striving for change to believe in their own potential.

AWS Educate didn’t just tell my story—they became a part of it. Their recognition of my journey reaffirmed that my path, while difficult, could inspire and uplift countless others who are navigating their own challenges.

Living the Vision

What makes 2024 so profound isn’t just the accomplishments—it’s the fact that these are things I envisioned and wrote down during my time in prison. Every milestone this year is a fulfillment of promises I made to myself. From excelling academically to starting my transition into tech, from maintaining focus despite challenges to embracing every opportunity, I’m living the life I once could only dream about.

As I close out this transformative year, I carry immense gratitude for the hurdles I’ve overcome and the milestones I’ve achieved. 2024 will forever be a reminder of what’s possible when you refuse to give up, even when the odds are stacked against you. I look forward to 2025 with excitement and anticipation, ready to take on new challenges and continue building the life I’ve fought so hard for.
